Redcar kicked off with the wind behind them, after only a few minutes it started to rain a bit and then it poured for the rest of the first half. Ashington took the game to Redcar and continually attacked and Redcar’s limited possession had to be kicked away, using the wind to gain any ground. After 25 mins Ashington were driving close to the try line, Redcar’s No. 8 Domonic Ayre was adjudged to have impeded an Ash player by blocking him and stopping a try, so the Ref awarded a penalty try and gave Ayre a yellow card, 0 – 7. Ten mins later Ash scored again, the conversion missed, 0 – 12.

Ashington restarted the game and as the rain and wind abated Redcar started to run the ball a bit more and put some good moves together, which lead to a try from Domonic Ayre, who had returned from the sin bin, winger Danny Addison was just wide with the conversion attempt, 5 – 12. On 52 mins Ashington centre No.12 got a yellow for killing the ball in a ruck. On 55 mins Redcar got a penalty which Danny Addison slotted over, 8 – 12. Ten mins later he was in action again this time in and altercation with his opposite number, Ash’s replacement winger No.16. They pushed and shoved each other and waved their handbags and grunted and for that the Ref gave them 10 mins to cool off in the bin, with a yellow card. On 76 mins Ash scored again and it was converted, 8 – 19. Redcar had a late flurry and were desperately trying to score again and in the dying mins, Redcar’s Brad Smith was given a yellow card, as the seconds ticked away.
