Redcar Sinks Seaton’s Canoe

On cold and windy day Redcar travelled to Seaton Carew and were full of confidence, with a strong team, minus a hooker, they looked like they were ready to run riot. What exactly did happen was, it was more of a struggle than the scoreline showed.

As all season Redcar were up against a bigger pack and were pushed back at every scrum but the backs looked dangerous even with their limited possession. From the kick off Redcar attacked and Shane Hurley finished off a good move involving forwards and backs after only 3 mins, 0 – 5. Shane was injured in scoring and was replaced by Al Dixon. Only 2 mins later, from defending their own line, winger Matty Curry broke away and ran almost the length of the field and Brad Stovell was on his shoulder in support to score the try, 0 – 10.

Then came a period of 20 mins when Seaton’s forwards got back into the game and they severely tested Redcar’s defence with a series of driving scrums, but they got nowhere. Redcar’s halfbacks were running the show and flyhalf Josh Dixon scored next, under the posts, converted by Danny Addison, 0 – 17.

Half Time Seaton Carew 0 Redcar 17.

In the second half, winger Danny Addison was given a yellow card for tackling a player who was in the air and in the process of catching a high kick. Redcar’s half backs continued to orchestrate things although substitute, Neil Young caught white line fever and ignored a 2 man overlap and was held up over the line, a try was eventually scored by Craig Newlands, which brought the bonus point, this was followed by tries from captain Steve Johnson and another from Josh Dixon, both of which were converted by Danny Addison.

Credit must be given to Seaton, who could have put some points on the board but opted for scrum after scrum, when kickable penalties were available, so the score line flattered Redcar. Not a game for the purists, at times painful to watch, but a win is a win. If this report was a school report it would read, Redcar’s attack 7 out of 10, defence 8 out of 10, scrum 4 out of 10, lineout 3 out of 10.

Could and should have done better !!!

Brad Stovell continues to impress as does Josh Dixon but on the day winger/fullback Danny Addison was awarded man of the match.

Final score Seaton Carew 0 Redcar 36.
