A See-saw Game At Sedgefield

A See-saw Game At Sedgefield

Dave Pearson22 Sep - 11:19

Redcar survive the showdown at Sedgefield.

With both teams fighting for their first win of the season this was expected to be a tightly contested fixture. Redcar started the game in a much improved fashion compared to the past couple weeks, quick out the gate Redcar went 21-7 up with only 20 minutes played. The first try came from a well worked Redcar move that found the edge of the Sedge defence, the broken play after saw a clever chip and chase scored from flyhalf Lee Collins. The second try came from substitute young Dan Traynor, a 17 year old colt on his debut, thrown in to action after starting full back Tommy Loudon got a dead leg. Again, the ball moved across the backs and Dan bravely slid in at the corner as the defence rushed over. The third try, a much simpler one, a tap penalty and chip offload led to Dan "The Salmon" Taylor, powering over the line.
At this point and at many points during the day the game should have been done, however silly penalty's allowed Sedge to kick to the corner, with their well drilled and executed catch and drive they were able to stay in the game. Redcar's next try came from a bit of luck, as a bounced and deflected ball found it's way to centre Joe Hudson’s hands who had to simply fall over the line, another young lad who impressed massively. Sedge kept the pressure up, weaving in tries from more catch and drives throughout the game. Their big forwards, well organised at the lineout showed dominance when attacking from this platform. However, Redcar matched them in most of the other areas on the pitch including a dominant scrum. Redcar’s downfall throughout the game ended up being their discipline picking 3 yellow cards and allowing the set pieces for Sedge.
But luck was to be on Redcar’s side this day, a not straight lineout from Sedge gave Redcar possession, and with the last play of the game and being 1 point down the ball was moved through the backs, a dummy from ‘Man of the Match’ Danny Addison allowed him to walk over the try line. This was a big win for the boys, a tricky fixture and tricky team. Lots of positives to take away from the game but the lads definitely know that the hard work needs to continue for this young side.
