Redcar put in the performance, but struggle to get the result. The boys travelled to newly relegated South Shields Westoe not really knowing what to expect from their opposition. Another young team but with some returning experienced lads bolstered the team this week. A last minute change also saw us bring in Tom Allday, another colt making his debut at scrum half. Redcar started the better team, and for the first 40 minutes dominated the game. Some strong defence set the tone for the game in the earlier exchanges and some blistering runs from Marc Smith got Redcar on the front foot. The first try came early in the first half as Redcar kept it simple going through the phases and Dom Ayre found his way through the Westoe defence. After another break from Marc, Sam Lawton managed to get the pop from the ground and bundle his way over. Westoe answered back with a couple of their own tries before Dom Ayre found his way over the try line for his second try and Redcar’s third.

The second half saw Westoe make a couple of changes that made an immediate impact, some large, strong runners got Westoe on the front foot and Redcar quickly found themselves trapped in their 22. The 2 replacements were the next 2 try scorers for Westoe as they bundled their way over the line, before they added a penalty to push the lead to 10. After the quick 15 minute blast Redcar settled back in to the game but struggled to add anymore score to the game. In fairness to Westoe they slowed down Redcar’s quick ball from the first half and had some decisions go their way. This was a much improved performance by Redcar and something they can take many positives from. This is all vital experience for our young lads, who are really having to learn on the job
