Sedgefield kicked off on a cold but dry day at Mackinlay Park. On 5 mins Sedge kicked a penalty, from in front of the posts, 0 – 3. The game got a bit heated and a scuffle broke out between Redcar’s No.8 and Sedge No.7 and it escalated into a large fracas, The referee redcarded the two main offenders and yellowcarded Redcar’s centre No.13 and Sedge’s prop No.3. So for the next 10 mins it was down to 13 a side and this opened up a bit of space on the field and on 15 minutes, winger Gabe Holmes weaved his way over to score and it was converted by Danny Addison, 7 – 3. 10 mins later Redcar were on the attack again and a break from full back Lee Collins gave hooker Phil Dyball the ball and he scored, Ado again added the conversion, 14 – 3. On 33 mins Sedge’s No.17 got a yellow card for a high tackle and from the penalty a quick tap was taken and hooker Phil ‘Dibsey’ Dyball charged forward and passed to prop Steve ‘Bully’ Wilson who crashed over to score, 19 – 3. Sedge then hit back and scored 2 tries, the second one right on half time. With all the stoppages for injuries, penalties and cards, the first half had lasted an hour.

Redcar kicked off the second half and within 5 mins the Sedge No.4 got a yellow card for a tip tackle. On 7 mins flanker Brad Smith scored Redcar’s bonus point try after a Sedge attack broke down in Redcar’s 22 and 2nd row Marc Smith made a good break and Brad got on the end of it and sped away to score, 24 – 13. A few mins later Brad got a yellow card, the ref was giving out more cards than Postman Pat at Christmas. On 16 mins Sedge fought back scored a converted try to close the gap and bring the score to 24 – 20. Redcar seemed to be undeterred by this and on 25 mins winger Gabe Holmes once again made a good break and the other winger Joe Hudson took it on and galloped over to score, it was converted by Lee Collins, 31 – 20. 5 mins later Redcar were charging up the field looking unstoppable, with Gabe Holmes scoring his second try, meanwhile after the try was awarded by the ref he looked back down the field and saw yet another scuffle had broken out, so he blew the whistle for full time, 10 mins early, he had struggled all game and clearly had had enough.
